STUDENTS at a Hallam school are certainly a cut above the rest.
Last Thursday, Education and Training Minister Lynne Kosky officially opened a hairdressing salon at Eumemmerring Secondary College in Hallam for Vocational Education and Training (VET) students.
The initiative will allow students to choose to complete an accredited hairdressing certificate in their own professionally equipped school salon, Split Ends.
Ms Kosky said the salon would complement a long list of professional facilities used by VET students at the college, including a recording studio, fitness equipment for sport and recreation training, and upgraded multimedia computers and software.
In addition, the automotive program features a fully operational workshop.
Ms Kosky said Eumemmerring Secondary College had identified a strong demand for a hairdressing program through regular student surveys.
“The hairdressing program will be made available to students from other schools and within the local community,” Ms Kosky said.
“This demonstrates how VET programs create opportunities for students and the wider community.”
Ms Kosky said the Frawley Road campus had set a terrific example in the region for what was possible when schools had a strong commitment to excellence in VET.
“Vocational programs in schools, TAFE colleges, workplaces and community settings provide an accessible and high-quality means for young people to get the skills they need,” she said.
Hallam Campus principal Andrina Young said 60 students were completing the certificate II in hairdressing in the new purpose-built hairdressing training salon.
VET manager Sue Lubbock said the salon would enable students to complete the certificate II in hairdressing and provide them with an advanced skill base.
“Students are able to complete their training in hairdressing while studying a range of other courses, including VCE subjects,” she said.
