Pick a free fruit Friday

OUT with the lollies and in with the fruit.
That is the message being sent to local school children through the State Government’s Free Fruit Friday program.
Students in prep, grade one and two at participating schools will get a piece of fruit every Friday, Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley announced recently.
“It is important that the Bracks Government continues to support families by encouraging good nutrition,” Ms Graley said.
“Free Fruit Friday is just one of a number of recent initiatives that achieve this for our local community.
“Funding will be provided to schools to enable them to purchase fruit directly from a local greengrocer or wholesaler and distribute it to children during breaks,” she said. “This is the fulfilment of an election promise worth $11.1 million across the state. The voluntary program will be introduced over four years to encourage young Victorians to improve their diet and establish a lifetime habit of healthier eating.”
Schools already involved in healthy eating programs such as the Kids – Go For Your Life will be among the first to participate.
