MONASH University multimedia student Long Zheng is doing his bit to beat the drought.
The Berwick campus student helped his Oz Dream Team take out the top prize in this year’s Microsoft Imagine Cup.
With no background in farming and agriculture, the team was driven by the impact that climate change and drought has had on the farming industry and community.
Mr Zheng last week headed to Paris to represent Australia at the next stage of the competition, the Microsoft Imagine World Cup.
The team came up with SOAK (Smart Operational Agricultural Kit) – a combination of hardware and software, designed to assist drought-stricken farmers manage their water resources effectively.
Oz Dream Team went it alone and worked largely online, Mr Zheng said.
Judges were impressed with the sophistication, affordability and commercial development readiness of SOAK.
“It’s not just conceptual, it’s functional,” Mr Zheng said.
