MARAMBA Primary School students are definitely not Wallies with water.
The Narre Warren school became one of the first to receive a fully accredited Water – Learn It! Live It! stamp under an innovative water saving program.
Over the past eight months, the school has been working with South East Water to integrate water conservation into its curriculum and reduce water use throughout their grounds.
To mark the school’s accreditation, a sign has been placed at the school entrance to let the community know about its commitment to a sustainable water future.
The program is part of the State Government’s Our Water Our Future behaviour change campaign to educate Victorians on the importance of saving water.
Maramba principal Darrell Mullins said the school was extremely proud of its accreditation and excited about implementing new water saving initiatives.
“We’ve installed slow-release taps, non-flushing urinals and a water tank for our greenhouse and look forward to further water conservation initiatives such as the use of recycled water to water our oval,” he said.
To meet accreditation for Water – Learn it! Live it! the school achieved a series of milestones including participation in National Water Week activities and water conservation development sessions for teachers.
“Our students have become very water waste conscious and immediately report toilets or taps that won’t shut off. These water watchers are our planet savers of the future,” Mr Mullins said.
South East Water provides schools wanting to integrate water conservation into the curriculum with a Water – Learn It! Live It! resource kit.
South East Water managing director Dennis Cavagna said the program helped to save water by providing the latest knowledge to assist schools in raising awareness and reduce consumption at home and school.
The kit gives teachers the resources they need to develop fun and interesting ways to teach students about saving water.
Mr Cavagna said other schools were still able to register their interest in the program.
“South East Water encourages schools in the area to register for the program and become an accredited Water Learn It! Live It! School,” he said.
“We applaud schools such as Maramba primary for their commitment to a sustainable water future.”
