STUDENTS at Berwick’s Kambrya College showed others that it is easy to tread lightly on our earth recently when they hosted an environment summit.
Science teacher Libby Evans said the school had been using Origin Energy project materials to focus on environmental issues this term.
The student program is called Tread Lightly and Ms Evan said students had used their knowledge of renewable energy and sustainable design to designing and build models of sustainable houses.
Ms Evan said students had also taken on projects to promote sustainability at school through reducing energy use, recycling paper, conserving water and managing waste.
Students even hosted a lights off at school day, a rubbish free lunch day and planted a native water-saving garden as part of the environmentally friendly initiative.
“The hands-on tasks really appealed to students, such as building their sustainable houses,” said Ms Evans.
To round up the term, the students held an environmental summit last Thursday, 14 September to share their findings with their year level and invited special guests from the community to participate. The Kambrya College students have also entered the Origin Energy Participation Awards which encourage students to share their energy saving ideas with the community.
Last year the students won a runner-up prize for Victoria and this year they will again be in the running to share in prizes worth $20,000, including a fully installed solar energy system for the school.
“It’s a great incentive for the students and encourages them to work towards a goal,” said Ms Evans.
