SECONDARY schools are joining forces by introducing a program for Year 7 and 8 girls to tackle eating disorders, teenage pregnancy, depression and drug and alcohol dependency.
Angel Light Link’s All About You program is a fast paced and informative high school program that’s run once a week during the school’s lunch or class time.
The non profit organisation is a harm prevention charity that has been running in Casey for the past three years.
Angel Light Link’s founder Sally McCracken said the organisation promoted the prevention of harmful and abusive behaviours by providing information, counselling and support.
Mrs McCracken said the program was available to all schools in Casey regardless of their size or budget.
“There is no charge for the program but donations are welcome. However, there is no obligation,” she said.
The program provides a facilitator and two assistants that attend each school and run the workshops.
All of the staff are fully trained and provide the school with a copy of the current Working with Children Checks for each volunteer.
Mrs McCracken said the program was run in seven schools last year with more than 320 girls taking part. This year, Eumemmerring College, the Glen Eagles Campus in Endeavour Hills is one of seven local schools registered.
“The students receive hand outs, surveys and participate in games and discussions,” she said.
“All of the information provided has been written based on a number of different sources including websites, books and personal experiences.”
Mrs McCracken said the program could potentially prevent some of the key issues raised before they become a problem.
