THERE were green thumbs galore at Kambrya College this week when students embarked on an environmental project to brighten up their school grounds.
More than 80 students from year eight took part in the Greening Australia program designed to encourage schools to take pride in their surroundings and at the same time learn about the importance of looking after the local environment.
Kambrya was one of only 10 schools throughout Victoria successful in their application for the program that focused on the school’s specifically designed horticulture area.
Students helped design, plan and landscape the indigenous garden and learnt about the educational benefits that come with a sustainable gardening environment.
Plans are in progress to use the horticulture to cultivate trees for transplanting around the wider school community.
Along with getting their hands dirty, students logged the progress of the project with the use of a website and other multi-media technology to make the whole project a learning experience.
