Hard work pays off

Hillcrest Christian College project manager John Smithard has received the Christian Schools Australia Pioneers Award on his retirement after 20 years at the school.
Mr Smithard received the award at the Christian Schools Australia conference last month.
His association with the school began in 1978 as manager of Shiloh Ranch youth camp, which later became Hillcrest Christian College.
His lifetime’s work has concentrated on working with young people. He took up the job of principal in 1987, overseeing a growth in enrolments that year.
On two occasions Mr Smithard lent the school $25,000 and $130,000 towards purchase of land and other costs for the college’s Ayr Hill campus at Clyde North.
He was instrumental in the establishment of that campus, selling his farm to ensure funds would be available and overseeing property development at the campus.
During his time as principal, the student population increased from 98 to about 750.
The Pioneers Award honours leaders whose dedication underpins the development of the modern Christian schools movement. It began at the 30th anniversary of the founding of Christian Schools Limited, a predecessor to the CSA.
The award is available to teachers, administrators, board members, parents, members of committees, and others contributing to Christian schools.
Mr Smithard received a Citizen desk clock to mark the award.
