CASEY mayor Janet Halsall last week presented four Hallam Primary School grade six students with Edwin Flack awards for sporting achievement.
Maddison Fenton and Jacob Davis both won Edwin Flack Medals, while twins Mark and Anthony Sgroi were given Edwin Flack certificates.
Berwick farmer Edwin Flack was Australia’s first Olympic champion, winning the 800m and 1500m athletic events in Athens in 1896.
The Edwin Flack awards coincide with the Olympic Games and are given to students, who not only excel in sport, but also stand out for their sportsmanship and leadership.
Hallam Primary School physical education teacher Simon Way has also nominated Maddison for the all-rounder category of the Southern Metropolitan Sports Award.
Her older sister, Stefanie, was the recipient of an Edwin Flack Medal in 2004 and won the all-rounder category of the Southern Metropolitan Sports Award the following year.
Maddison is the school’s vice-captain and has represented the institution at district, zone and state level in cross-country, track and field, and netball.
The Narre Warren Little Athletics Club member is also a state medal winner in discus and shot put.
Jacob is captain of the school’s soccer and football teams and is also a house captain.
He was unable to attend the ceremony due to ill health.
Mark and Anthony represented Hallam Primary School at both district and zone level in cross-country, tee-ball and soccer.
Way said the school was proud of all four students.
“They’re all very good kids and are well-liked,” he said.
“They play sport in the right spirit, are responsible, display sportsmanship and have a positive attitude towards physical education.”
The four students will lead Hallam Primary School’s athletics team at next month’s CDSSA inter-school track and field carnival at Edwin Flack Reserve in Berwick.
