A BERWICK dancer is tapping his way to the top after scoring a lead role in the upcoming production of Hot Shoe Shuffle by CLOC Musical Theatre.
Mitchell Lack-Powell, who has been dancing since the age of three, will take centre stage as Slap, one of the seven Tap Brothers in the musical.
Dancing, acting and singing to jazz, swing and blues music, the budding 17-year-old performer said he was looking forward to starring in the show.
“The rehearsing schedule has been intense but it all pays off when you’re on stage and the audience applaud you,” he said.
Mitchell is perfecting his dance technique at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, where he studies dance styles such as ballet, contemporary and jazz.
The former Beaconhills College student said his goal was to study a musical theatre course at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts.
“Celebrities like Hugh Jackman and Lisa McCune graduated from there,” he said.
“One day I’d like to be an artistic director or choreographer.”
Hot Shoe Shuffle tells the story of the seven Tap Brothers, a madcap dance act who learn they stand to inherit their long-lost father’s fortune providing they can reproduce his famous tap dancing act, and include in it a previously unknown sister, who doesn’t have a dancing bone in her body.
The show is a celebration of an era of music and dance that has been immortalised on stage and screen.
The musical will be held at the Alexander Theatre, Monash University in Clayton from Friday 3 October to Saturday 18 October.
Tickets cost $42 for adults, $39 for concession and $28 for children.
