PARKS Victoria has donated $300 to Eumemmerring College student Jade Houston to support her sustainable environmental-science project, to build a greenhouse for the school.
Year 9 student, Jade, is a member of the school’s environmental club which is working towards making the Gleneagles campus of the college the only five star accredited school in the area.
Schools that earn a place in the Sustainable Schools Initiative are given a five-star rating based on their contribution to the environment.
The greenhouse is just one way the students will contribute to the environmental sustainability of the school.
The students are looking forward to filling the greenhouse with native plants to grow and then replant back into the school’s gardens and Jade is glad that her involvement has helped the environment.
“It’s something I wanted to help out with because of all the things that are going on in the world, like global warming, I just really wanted to do something to help,” Jade Houston said.
The environmental club decided to appeal to local businesses, councils and environmental organisations such as Parks Victoria, through personal letters written by students.
It was Jade’s letter to Parks Victoria that attracted the funding they needed to build the greenhouse.
“I’m pretty happy knowing that I’m helping the environment,” she said.
