MORE than 200 illegally parked cars caused traffic chaos in Narre Warren North on Sunday.
The opening of a new church at the corner of Belgrave-Hallam Road and Hallam North Road resulted in motorists parking their cars on nature strips and near traffic lights.
Local resident Tim Allan said the parking problem would only get worse when a mosque was expected to open early next year.
“There were illegally parked cars everywhere,” he said.
“Conservatively I would say at least 200 were parked illegally. They went right down Belgrave-Hallam Road.”
Mr Allan said several of his neighbours had contacted the City of Casey in an attempt to get parking officers to patrol the problem area.
Casey manager of customer service Rob Colling said three complaints were received regarding illegal parking.
“A council officer contacted the church’s Pastor, who has assured council that this was a one-off event and parking problems are not likely to be repeated,” Mr Colling said.
“The complainants have been notified of this and were satisfied with this outcome.”
Mr Colling was unable to say if restricted parking signs would be installed in the vicinity of the church.
“The parking enforcement aspect will now be monitored by local laws officers,” he said.
