STUDENTS at a Narre Warren school have been hard at work fundraising for a brave youngster Tyler Fishlock.
Tyler visited Narre Warren South P-12 College last Thursday after the school’s Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) students banded together to raise funds for the six-year-old’s education fund.
His mother Georgette and sister Madeleine, who travelled from Caroline Springs to express their gratitude, accompanied Tyler to receive the $2000 cheque.
Tyler’s well-publicised plight with cancer caught the attention of the VCAL students three years ago.
The young boy has lost both eyes to a rare form of cancer, retinoblastoma, and there is a 99 percent chance that he will develop secondary cancer in either his bones or skin.
Despite losing both eyes, he is now finishing the first year of schooling at Caroline Springs Primary School.
Ms Fishlock said Tyler had picked up braille and could read and write.
She also spoke to students about Tyler’s journey with cancer, saying the funds would go towards buying new equipment.
She said she was blown away by the school’s generosity.
“What your community has done for my son we will be forever grateful for,” she said.
Ms Fishlock said her son still lived a normal life despite his blindness.
Narre Warren South P-12 College VCAL coordinator Laura Hicks said the fundraising efforts would be an ongoing part of the school’s curriculum.
Ms Hicks said the lively little boy and his enthusiasm for life moved teachers and students.
To add to the special occasion, the students also fundraised a further $2,000, in partnership with Windemere, for local children Vi Tran and Tara Sweetman.
