CHEERS erupted and songs were sung at the opening of an Environmental Sustainability fruit and vegetable garden at Chalcot Lodge Primary School.
The Chalcot choir, Chalcot cheer squad, students, staff and guests gathered to celebrate the opening of the garden, which has been designed as an outside classroom to support teaching and learning within the Environmental Sustainability curriculum program.
Teacher Dean Napier had an idea for the scheme at the beginning of the school year, and it was implemented with the help of City of Casey environmental education officer Abbie Lane, community liaison officer Anne Deluca, Bunnings manager Todd Spicer, local commerce and principal Kay Schlanger.
The entire student body was involved in early planning, making suggestions about the types of plants to grow and participating in a fun fruit and vegetable dress-up parade. Students from Eumemmerring Secondary College also helped by building the garden bed and a compost area.
Ms Schlanger said the project would benefit students’ education and health.
“The issue of environmental sustainability is extremely important to everyone around the world and the formal learning and practical experiences at Chalcot Lodge will help support greater care of us and the environment,” she said.
“The message is that everyone can make a positive difference.”
