POLICE are now running an early morning operation targeting speed on the Monash Freeway.
Casey Traffic Management Unit Sergeant Pat McGavigan said police would be enforcing the posted speed limit while the freeway is undertaking major roadworks including lane widths and road surfacing.
The Victorian Transport Association (VTA) CEO Philip Lovel said he was shocked at the activities of drivers on the Monash Freeway, in particular truck drivers.
“It’s a working construction site and all drivers must conform to the speed limits imposed, even at night or when you think that no-one is around,” he said.
Sgt McGavigan has a simple message for drivers.
“If people do not want to be caught speeding, watch the speedo in the car and do not exceed the posted speed limit,” he said.
Sgt McGavigan said driving at inappropriate speeds contributed to at least 30 per cent of deaths on Victorian roads each year.
He said speed affected both the risk of a crash happening and the severity of injuries sustained during the crash.
Sgt McGavigan said the VicRoads Transport Safety Section specifically targeted trucks over 4.5 tonnes, regularly monitoring their speed on the freeway.
The VTA is pleading with all motorists and truck drivers to obey speed restriction signs.
Construction on the Monash Freeway will continue for the next 18 months.
