Tobacco sale leads to fine

THE City of Casey has successfully prosecuted a former Doveton business and its owner for the sale of a tobacco product to a person under the age of 18.
Jagsfield Pty Ltd, owned by Paul Benbow, pleaded guilty in Dandenong Magistrates Court on 19 November to one charge, under the Tobacco Act 1987.
The court ordered the company to pay a fine of $550 and council’s legal costs of $2363, without conviction.
City of Casey community safety manager Caroline Bell said council took an active role in ensuring tobacco products were not sold to minors.
“The court findings are an example to other businesses in Casey to be vigilant in ensuring they are not selling tobacco products to people under the age of 18,” she said.
Anyone aware of a business selling tobacco products to minors can call council’s customer service centre on 9705 5200.
