A TEACHER from a Narre Warren primary school is closing the books after more than 30 years of service.
Nola Garvin, the longest-serving teacher at Fountain Gate Primary School, said she was happy to be retiring at the end of the year. “It’s time to have a rest,” she said.
Ms Garvin, 64, began as the school’s librarian when the doors opened in 1969, before becoming its first physical education teacher. She went on to teach prep and Grade 1 students.
“Teaching the young students is a challenge but the key to teaching is having a sense of humour,” she said.
Principal Jenny Duggan described Ms Garvin as a “living treasure”.
“She’s the perfect teacher to take young children on their journey through education,” she said. “We even named the school’s community room in her honour.”
The school community will hold a function this Friday night to celebrate Ms Garvin’s career.
