A TEACHER and his former student will join forces on Casey council.
River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith was reunited with one of his former media students, Simon Curtis, who is one of the newly-elected Edrington Ward councillors, during last week’s council meeting to swear in the new councillors.
Cr Smith told the News that working alongside a past student from St Francis Xavier College made him feel old.
“I taught him all he knows,” laughed Cr Smith.
Cr Curtis said he felt he was in the teacher and student relationship with Cr Smith like back in 1988.
“He is one of the most experienced councillors in the City of Casey and I will be learning from him once again,” he said.
“I’m open to all avenues of advice.”
Cr Smith taught Cr Curtis Year seven media studies while at the Beaconsfield school.
Mayor Geoff Ablett told the gallery he was delighted with the enthusiasm he felt in the council.
Cr Ablett, one of eight new councillors, said the introduction of fresh faces to the council was a step in the right direction.
”It’s important that councillors work as a team,” he said.
