Relief for that doggone itch

SUMMER is itchy skin season.
This is uncomfortable for pets and annoying and worrying for owners, according to Hampton Park Veterinary Clinic vets who have provided tips to treat itchy dogs with mild signs.
However if the skin is broken or the dog distressed they recommended that owners seek help promptly.
“Eliminating fleas is essential,” they said.
“Check for fleas running through the fur and for flea dirt (little black specks of flea droppings).
“If present, treat your pet immediately and continue every month with a spot-on flea control from the veterinarian.”
The veterinarians also said to avoid contact with irritating substances such as some plants.
“Skin irritation is apparent on the unhaired or thinly haired skin under the belly and armpits and sometimes under the feet and chin. Bathing can remove irritating substances and soothe itchy skin,” they said.
“Poor nutrition can also lead to skin problems.
“For pets with suspected food allergies, there are several high-quality nutritionally balanced hypo-allergenic diets available from your veterinarian.
“Soothing creams and shampoos can provide relief. Ask your veterinarian for advice on suitable products.”
Hampton Park Veterinary Clinic and the Australian owned and manufactured Dermcare-Vet range of specialised pet shampoos and skin care products have a special offer for all pets examined between 10 and 24 December.
