POLICE are urging elderly people to take greater care on the roads following a spike in pedestrian deaths.
Victoria Police said 55 pedestrians were killed on the state’s roads last year – 14 more than in 2007.
Police say they especially wanted elderly pedestrians to be more vigilant because statistics showed pedestrians aged 65 years and over accounted for almost half of the fatalities.
Police have also encouraged all pedestrians to obey traffic signals and avoid distractions such as MP3 players or mobile phones while crossing roads.
