WINDERMERE Child and Family Services is rallying community support for one if its own, after thieves stole a 15-year-old’s brand new bicycle while he was at work.
Edward Kelly purchased a lime green Mongoose bicycle for his son Leigh so he could ride to work, only to have it stolen three days later.
The Dandenong North resident said his son started a baking apprenticeship on 3 January and on the third day of work the locked-up $440 bicycle was stolen from Waverley Gardens Shopping Centre.
The disappointed father said his son was angry and upset.
“We’d love the thieves to do the right thing and hand back the bicycle,” he said.
Windermere Child and Family Services community engagement and fund-raising manager Terry Thomas said the incident was disappointing and disheartening for the Narre Warren based centre.
“Edward was so proud that his son had scored an apprenticeship and as a result purchased the bicycle as an affordable way of transport,” she said.
Mrs Thomas is hoping a local business will put their hand up and offer a replacement bicycle for the family.
