A MONTH ago, Hallam cricketer Dale Tormey found out he was selected to play for the Victorian side at the Under 19 National Cricket Championships.
At the time, Tormey told the News he hoped to get his name out and attract some attention.
He certainly did that.
The 18-year-old stole the show at the tournament, top scoring with 424 runs at an average of 84.8.
He belted 103 not-out against Northern Territory, 98 against South Australia and half-centuries against New South Wales and the ACT.
As if that wasn’t enough, he had a bowl in the final game against the ACT and picked up two wickets from his nine overs.
“I fancy myself as a bit of a medium pacer,” he said with a laugh.
“It was just more bragging rights than anything when I said I should’ve had a bowl more often.”
Tormey said he was surprised at how his tournament unfolded.
“I didn’t expect to do as good as I did,” he said.
“I don’t think there was a day when I didn’t feel comfortable at the crease.
“When I walked out to bat, everything seemed to click and the ball came out of the middle nine times out of 10 every shot that I played – it was a bit unusual to be honest.”
Tormey said he was happy that he had got his name out and had attracted some interest.
“I’ve been speaking with a few people about certain things and different opportunities that might arise for myself now,” he said.
But the young star wouldn’t let on as to whether he had spoken with state squad selectors.
“I can’t really say to be honest, I’m not 100 per cent sure. All I can do is keep scoring runs – if they want to have a look at me, they’ll have a look I guess,” he said.
