CASEY Little Athletics Centre competitors collected two medals at last month’s Victorian Little Athletics State Relay Championships at Olympic Park.
The club’s mixed under-14, 4 x 200m relay team of Ben Hunt, Jack Jordan, Lucy Topham and Cassie Nadalin claimed silver, while its boys’ under-10, 4 x 100m squad of Lachlan Old, Christian Daly, James de Silva and Oscar Clavarino won bronze.
Casey had 14 teams qualify for the championships from the Southern Metropolitan Regional relay meet.
Only Whittlesea City’s quartet finished ahead of Casey’s mixed under-14 squad that ran 1:52.71.
The boys’ under-10 team qualified sixth fastest for the final before snatching bronze behind Nunawading and Diamond Valley in a time of 1:00.06 from lane one.
Casey’s coaches dedicated an extra hour of relay preparation on top of its weekly training sessions in the lead-up to the championships.
Casey publicity officer and Ben’s father, Craig Hunt was thrilled with the results.
“We’re absolutely rapt,” he said.
“Relays further enhance team spirit rather than just doing individual events.”
Hunt said club officials were encouraging athletes to become involved in relay squads.
Casey’s athletics season resumes from the Christmas-New Year break on Saturday, 17 January with a twilight meeting from 5pm.
Training resumes at 6.30pm on Tuesday 20 January.
