Pet care in fire

WITH the recent extreme heat conditions and fire risks and more hot weather expected during February, the Local Laws team at Cardinia Shire Council is calling for residents to take extra care of their pets.
Brooke Ranken, Senior Local Laws Officer, says plenty of accessible fresh water should be available for pets during hot weather.
“Animals and birds dehydrate quickly in heat conditions with potentially lethal effects on their general health, in particular kidneys and heart,” she said.
“Pets are similar to people, especially when they are old and frail or very young and they need watching on extremely hot days and extra care.
“Wherever possible keep pets in a cool place with plenty of fresh water close by during hot weather,” she said.
Ms Ranken also warned that pets should never be left in cars but especially on hot days.
“Dogs do not sweat so they are particularly vulnerable as temperatures inside cars climb quickly to dangerous levels,” said Ms Ranken.
“People who take dogs with them to work, especially in the back of utes and trucks should reconsider on hot days. The trays can become searingly hot in the sun.
“Heat stroke can be a life-threatening condition in animals,” she said.
Residents living in fire danger areas are also reminded to make provisions for their pets in the event of a fire or emergency.
“We know from research that people mourn for their pets and photos when they lose them in a fire so it makes sense to include them in emergency plans,” she added.
“Be aware where pets are during an emergency, be ready to act and evacuate them or keep them inside and safe in the event of fire,” suggested Ms Ranken.
