A NARRE Warren North vet has been treating injured horses, possums, kangaroos and reptiles that suffered burns in the Victorian bushfires.
Dr Gary Stapleton from the WoofPurNay Veterinary Clinic and Hospital told the News he had cared for more than a dozen horses that had suffered burns to their faces in the Gippsland and Kinglake blazes.
Dr Stapleton, who has been a vet for more than 30 years, said the bushfires brought back memories of Ash Wednesday, where he also treated injured animals.
With nine vets working out of the Belgrave Hallam Road clinic, Dr Stapelton said the mixed practice treated all types of animals. The unique hospital, with a viewing area for budding vets to see surgical operations, a swimming pool for dogs and a full emergency clinic, has been in operation for the past nine months.
Dr Stapleton said it was the only clinic in Casey that was open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
WoofPurNay Veterinary Clinic and Hospital also has a kids club, with more than 300 children between six and 17 years taking part in various activities.
Show and tell nights where children and their families can bring along their pets are a huge hit, according to Dr Stapleton.
“The sessions are a get together where everyone can share stories and learn about their companions,” he said.
Dr Stapleton is also looking at starting night walks with the community through the local parks in the City of Casey.
“I enjoy the interaction with people and seeing the pleasure they get of animals,” he said.
WoofPurNay Veterinary Clinic and Hospital is the only facility in Australia that has been built as a veterinary hospital, with an education aspect to raise awareness in responsible pet care.
“Whichever way you look at it, children need to understand empathy and responsible pet ownership,” he said.
