ROTARIANS are strapping on their helmets as they set off for the annual Rotary Ride to Conference.
Geoff Double and Ray Martin from the Rotary Club of Berwick and German exchange student Philipp Leimkuehler will take part in the fundraising event where they will ride almost 600km through northern Victoria from 14 to 20 March.
This year’s ride will be the third one for Mr Martin.
“It’s reasonably demanding. We do a lot of training, about 300 to 400 km a week,” he said. “During the ride we average about 110km each day for 5 days, and about 50 km the last day.”
Mr Martin said the ride was about fellowship and friendship.
“I really enjoy doing it. It’s terrific fun. This is Rotary at work,” he said.
The route will take riders through Beechworth, Yackandandah, Wangaratta, Dookie, Shepparton, Numurkah, Katamatite Yarrawonga-Mulwala, and Rutherglen, ending up in Albury where the conference is set to take place.
The event is aiming to collect more than $60,000 through donations made to the riders, donors and the supporting Rotary clubs.
The event, which is in its eighth year, has raised more than $400,000.
The money collected will go towards the Life Education program, Rotary Centenary House and the international ShelterBox project.
