PHILLIP Island Football Club will become the 12th club in the 2010 Casey Cardinia League (CCL) competition if the recommendations of the WorkSafe VCFL South Gippsland football review, released last week, are implemented.
Phillip Island FC’s inclusion would address the weekly byes in the CCL.
The report took into account demographics and population trends across the wider South Gippsland area with both the West Gippsland Latrobe Football League and Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL) among the stakeholders consulted.
The VCFL was acutely aware that Phillip Island FC is uniquely located and, unlike most clubs in the VCFL, it has limited options as to suitable leagues.
However, the report stated that, in assessing the move to CCL there was a strong under-18 competition along with a Colts competition to cater for future growth.
Phillip Island’s facilities were deemed more than acceptable when compared to the standards of the CCL while the league also catered for netball.
MPNFL operations manager Ian Benson said that no decision had been made and any move would need to be discussed at board level.
“We were involved in the consultation process and a number of scenarios were raised, but the board of directors will need to properly assess the report and form a response,” he said.
Responses from leagues and clubs must be lodged by no later than 27 March.
