Berwick goes down fighting

– Stuart Teather
STATE League Three South East was back in full flight on the weekend, but local hope Berwick City went down 3-2 to Brandon Park.
City went ahead early with a header goal from Gary Davidson, but Brandon Park equalised before the half-time break.
Early in the second half, Orlando Mejias headed a goal through off a corner, giving his side a 2-1 lead, but 10 minutes later Mejias got a red card for elbowing, swinging the momentum back to Brandon Park.
Brandon Park equalised midway through the half, then got the match-winner inside the final five minutes with a stunning free-kick from 20m out.
“This guy, this free kick, (Cristiano) Ronaldo of Manchester United would’ve been proud of it, it was just a super kick,” Berwick City coach Joe Carrol said.
Despite the loss, the good news is all the other games were draws in the league, meaning Berwick City is only one point off the next eight teams.
Endeavour United and Doveton had their first hit-outs in Provisional League One South East after being demoted from the State League competition at the end of last season, and the clubs had mixed results.
Endeavour United endured a 3-1 thumping at the hands of Mornington, while Doveton drew 0-0 with Warragul United.
