Red alert for job losses

NARRE Warren, Cranbourne, Doveton, Endeavour Hills, Hallam and Hampton Park are among those suburbs expected to face job losses as a result of the current economic crisis.
As shown in an investigation by the University of Newcastle, the statistics label most of the major growth areas in the south-east as being on ‘red alert’ for major job losses.
The report, by researchers at the Centre of Full Employment and Equity, states that suburbs of Lynbrook, Lysterfield and Tooradin are also on red alert.
The findings suggests that residents in Narre Warren and Cranbourne are “very vulnerable” to employment loss.
In terms of post secondary qualifications, Cranbourne has education levels below the Victorian average, with 51.1 per cent without post secondary school education compared to the national average of 37 per cent.
Narre Warren is close behind with 47.7 per cent.
The industries expecting to have the most job losses are construction, manufacturing, mining, retail, accommodation, food venues, finance, insurance and property.
Report co-creator professor Bill Mitchell said the team had developed the model to predict the employment vulnerability by suburb.
The report shows that for $8.5 billion the Federal Government could create 560,000 minimum wage jobs over the next 12 months.
