PETER Somers was the toast of Cranbourne RSL Bowls Club when he made it to the semi-finals of the Champion of Champions event at Clayton Bowling Club last weekend.
Somers, who is the reigning Cranbourne RSL club champion, knocked over the Hampton Park champion in the first round 25-15 before getting up in a thriller in the quarter-final over the Narre Warren champion 25-24.
He was then up against Clayton champion Todd Simmons, who represents Victoria and Australia.
Somers hung in early – being only 8-10 down – but Simmons moved up a gear to score a runaway 25-10 victory.
Simmons went on to win the final.
Somers said he was very proud of his efforts and was especially proud to represent Cranbourne RSL.
Keysborough’s champion eliminated Peter Elgar from Cranbourne Bowling Club in the first round.
The week got even better for Somers when he and partner Greg Dore won their third Cranbourne RSL pairs final in a row, beating Bryan Biasci and Bill Bradbury 27-16.
Somers and Dore dropped four shots on the first end before powering away and were not troubled throughout the final.
The crowd watching the game got great amusement during the fifth end as Somers sent down a wrong bias – his first ever.
