CASEY is spinning its way to the top after receiving an Australian Government Bicycle Achievement Award at a Council meeting last week.
Deputy mayor Daniel Mulino accepted the local government award for a special initiative to encourage and promote cycling.
The award recognised the work of the City of Casey in collaboration with schools, health and community organisations, and as a ‘trailblazer’ in bike path development with the highest funding per capita of any Victorian municipality, Federal Cycling Promotion Fund program director Rosemarie Speidel said.
“Our winners reflect the very best examples of individuals and groups working to promote and encourage cycling,” she said.
Cr Mulino said more than $10m has been invested over the past decade to provide a comprehensive network of paths linking activity centres, schools, workplaces, parks, playgrounds and recreation reserves across the city, and with neighbouring cities and shires.
“In 2007-08, Council doubled (to $1.8) its financial commitment to further develop its large recreation path network,” he said
“These significant investments show that the City of Casey is leading the way in promoting and supporting cycling whether for transport, recreation or sport.”
Council also provides a number of facilities to support cycling, Cr Mulino said.
This includes a unique 2.2km track at Casey Fields, which was developed with input from the Bicycle Association of the South East and the Casey-Cardinia HPV and Cycling Club.
Casey’s Road Safety Education Centre also promotes cycling. It is the only state-of-the-art, purpose-built road safety education in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, and is open to all schools, community groups and families across the south east region.
