NARRE Warren residents over the age of 55 will receive free eye screening as an Australian-first eye health initiative to help save sight.
The Vision Van will be visiting the Narre Warren Bowls Club on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 April from 9.30am to 4pm testing for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) which is Australia’s leading cause of blindness.
According to research from the Macular Degeneration Foundation, around 500 Narre Warren residents are affected by AMD, with almost 4000 people at risk of the condition.
The checks will be performed in 15 minutes using state-of-the-art facilities and approved screening methods based on a protocol developed by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists and Optometrists Association, Australia.
Founding director of the Macular Degeneration Foundation Dr Paul Beaumont says because more than one in three Australians think blindness is simply part of getting old, AMD is not being detected early enough.
“Loss of sight in an elderly person is not normal,” he said. For bookings call 1800 176 255.
