A HOME away from home is how a volunteer describes the Hallam Community Learning Centre.
Narre Warren resident Therese Lynch was recently awarded with an honorary lifetime membership at the centre for more than 10 years of voluntary work.
Ms Lynch, who is the fundraising co-ordinator, told the News she first went to the Kays Road centre in 1999 with her grand-daughter to take part in one of the playgroup sessions.
“I discovered there was a whole new world at the centre after retiring from the work force,” she said.
The 63-year-old said it was the family atmosphere that attracted more than 500 people to the centre every week.
The Hallam Community Learning Centre holds various classes including craft, folk art, computers, first aid, Life ball and a chat group.
Ms Lynch and her team of volunteers have raised more than $20,000 in the past two years to purchase equipment and supplies for the different groups that use the centre.
“We’ve held car boot sales, put on sausage sizzles and gone on shopping tours to raise money,” she said.
Manager of the Hallam Community Learning Centre Dianne Wilson described Ms Lynch as a “dynamo who inspires us all.”
