St Paul Apostle Tennis Club players Judy Nguyen, Josh Tran and Samantha Meares combined to win the elite President’s Cup in the Waverley Tennis junior competition over Endeavour Hills last month.ENDEAVOUR Hills basketballer Stephanie Cumming, the first female Dandenong Ranger to earn an AIS scholarshiup, will return to Stud Road for the 2009/10 WNBL season.
The 18-year-old Australian Gems squad member, who played 11 games for the Rangers in 2006-07, re-signed with the club last week after spending two years in the AIS program.
Cumming started something of a trend when she packed her bags for Canberra in 2007, with fellow Dandenong juniors Liz Cambage and Rachel Jarry soon joining her.
No doubt Rangers coach Dale Waters will be hoping those girls follow Cumming’s path back home later this year.
TENNIS star Andrew Coelho experienced the highs and lows of the professional circuit over the past week.
The Endeavour Hills left-hander, who reached the third round of the men’s doubles at this year’s Australian Open, reached the second round in the singles event in France last week with a hard-fought clay-court victory over Dutchman Igor Susling.
But the 21-year-old retired hurt from his first-round clash with top-seeded German Julian Reister in Italy on Monday.
Let’s hope the injury doesn’t keep him out of action for too long.
STILL on tennis and St Paul Apostle Tennis Club is celebrating its dominant President’s Cup win in the Waverley Tennis junior competition last month.
Josh Tran, Samantha Meares and Judy Nguyen combined to defeat Endeavour Hills Tennis Club in the mixed team final. Up-and-comers Tran and Meares beat their Endeavour Hills opponents Robert Hilbig and Stephanie Hughes 6-3, 6-0 and 6-4, 6-0 in their respective singles rubbers.
Hilbig and Hughes gained some revenge with an 8-4 victory in the mixed doubles over Tran and Nguyen, but it was not enough to claim the title.
St Paul Apostle also enjoyed success in the boys’ D-grade doubles competition, with Cameron and Jason Vernam, Daniel Raj, Hurshad Vaghjee, Daniel Daubeney and Mark Zepackic finishing runners-up.
