CASEY Hockey Club’s women’s State League Three side put it all together in belting second-placed Melbourne High School 3-0 on Saturday.
The first half saw the Cannons take time to settle, but veteran defenders Debbie Jacobs and Fiona Young thwarted the attacking MHS forwards and set up their own forward thrusts.
One of these resulted in a penalty corner that Shara Cousins converted after a goalmouth scrap.
Casey was one-nil up at half-time and coach Russell Carvall implored his team to take control of the match early on.
That they did, scoring from another penalty corner – this time through Tiarna Kramer less than two minutes after the resumption.
MHS conceded a third to Emma Wallin after some good field play from Jill Fitzgerald.
Carvall is pleased his squad is starting to gel.
“It’s been a slow start to the season, I’m a new coach and we’ve had a number of new players coming into the team,” he said.
The women’s seconds gave Melbourne a 5-0 hiding through doubles from Sue Barling and Norma McGreal.
Hilary Doulton also got on the sheet to complete the Metro One South whitewash.
The thirds drew 0-0 with Chadstone in Metro Three South.
The Cannon’s men’s State League One side found the net through Nick Wood, but could not keep a tough Powerhouse team from a 2-1 victory.
The men’s thirds were exposed 3-1 despite under-15 player Tahlea Bronsgeest’s supreme performance.
Bronsgeest filled the vacant goalkeeping post.
Steve Randall scored the solitary goal through a tomahawk that deflected off a Southern United defender’s stick and looped over the ’keeper.
Casey’s under-nine white team welcomed Mentone in the junior game of the week and triumphed 1-0 in its first game of the season.
The Cannons’ goal came from a Rebecca Wagg intercept and she was able to penetrate the circle and fire the ball into the back of the net.
