Mirror reflects Emery’s bad luck

NARRE Warren South driver Geoff Emery showed mixed form in round two of the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series last weekend, finishing 12th overall.
Emery had blistering pace in qualifying, clocking the sixth-fastest time around the track in his VZ Commodore, setting the tone for the weekend.
However, as is all too often the case with Emery, bad luck struck in the opening race.
He was travelling along nicely in sixth position when he and Bryce Washington came together, causing him to lose a side mirror.
Emery’s mirror remained dangling off the side of the car and he received a black flag, resulting in a drive-through penalty.
Not surprisingly, Emery was frustrated with his run of bad luck.
“We were third-fastest in the first race practice, so we were looking for a good result,” he said.
“The car had good speed, we were looking for a really good result, we wouldn’t have had a problem looking for a top-five result, which is quite an achievement for us.
“It’s a shame we got done for the mirror. I’ve never heard of anyone getting done for a mirror before.
“That’s the third thing in a row we’ve had; the final round last year we had a rear door open up, last round we had a flat tyre and this round – the mirror.
“We’re hoping it comes in threes and now it’s all over.”
Perhaps the most disappointing thing is that Winton is Emery’s home track and was possibly his best opportunity to record a strong result.
Instead he has two months to prepare for his next crack at the top five in round three at Townsville from 10-12 July.
But he will not remain idle in the down-time, instead turning back the clock to his days in the Commodore Cup next month when he suits up for the series’ annual endurance race.
