Cannons quick on the draw

MISSED opportunities saw a dominant Casey Hockey Club’s men’s State League Three side settle for a hollow 0-0 draw against St Bede’s on the weekend.
Casey controlled the game from the outset and its forward thrusts resulted in a host of penalty corners in the first half, but some sprightly work from the St Bede’s goalkeeper denied them a conversion.
A rev-up from fiery full-back Nick Hatch saw the Cannons come out with renewed vigour after half-time, which almost resulted in a goal in the first minute.
Casey flocked forward in the frantic final minutes, but numerous shots – including one that deflected off the post – were either off target or the defiant St Bede’s ’keeper managed to saved them.
Blake Edwards controlled the game from centre-half and Scott Daly was impressive on the wing.
And Hatch, despite a five-minute break due to a yellow card, was handy in defence.
Coach Lawrie Edwards said the game was ‘one that got away’.
“Our structure was good, we put pressure on them throughout and got forward in numbers, but our inability to convert our corners was what killed us,” Edwards said.
“We got a point for the draw, but I think the boys will feel they deserved the three points for their efforts.
“It wasn’t to be, we’ll forget that, learn some lessons and concentrate on next week’s game against Footscray.”
Metro Three South broke through for its first win of the season against an inexperienced Greater Dandenong Warriors side.
Captain Rodney Tredoux was a controlling force in the middle and the return of the silky skilled Craig Moore was integral in the 5-0 whitewash.
Club doyen Jeff Reidy played the game of his life, smashing two first-half goals and doing his best to secure an elusive hat-trick.
Moore added a couple of sweet solo goals and Tredoux finished off some strong work from Andrew Axton and Moore to cap a good game.
