Event for ‘rockstar’ causes

COMMUNITY groups have a chance to shine in the 2009 Westpac Australian Community Idol competition.
Every group in the south-east metropolitan region can enter for their chance to win $3000 cash as well as a host of practical resources to help further their cause. Local groups are encouraged to enter the competition and show the nation what they are doing about how important they are to the community, Liberal MLC for South Eastern Metropolitan Region Inga Peulich said.
“There are so many community groups in the south-east metropolitan region that do invaluable, inspiring work every day, for a little or no public recognition,” she said. “Even the smallest groups make a big difference to our community, and should be very proud of their efforts. I urge them all to take a little time to think about how valuable they are and to submit an entry to Australian Community Idol.”
Any community group can enter the competition if they demonstrate that they’re inclusive and dynamic, well-run and effective and that they lead and stick up for their community.
Finalists in past years have included a refugee support group, a theatre company, a cricket club and an economic development group.
Thirteen entries will be short-listed and the top three are invited to present their story to a live audience on the first day of Communities in Control 2009 on 15 June.
Delegates will vote on their favourite and the winner will be announced on the second day of the conference, 16 June.
Applications can be submitted online at www.ourcommunity.com.au/idol or an entry form can be downloaded and submitted via fax, post or email at service@ourcommunirt.com.au or on 9320 6800. Entries close at 5pm on 29 May.
