POLICE are urging motorists to play their part in reducing the state’s road toll following an unfathomable 32 deaths last month.
Casey-based police operations targeting impaired and hoon drivers are helping reduce serious injury road collisions, according to police, with the Casey Police Service Area leading the way with a 48.1 per cent reduction.
In the City of Casey, the number of serious injury collisions from January to March has dropped from 77 in 2008 to 40 this year.
Assistant Commissioner Ken Lay is pleading with motorists to pay attention and drive unimpaired, after conceding that police were doing all they could to cut the carnage on Victorian roads.
“Complacency is our biggest killer – the driver who believes he or she is out of harm’s reach is the one most likely to suffer serious injury or even death,” he said.
“Motorists must be aware that the roads are unpredictable and that one small mistake could cost them, or someone else, their lives.”
Police will continue to target drink and drug drivers, speeding motorists and hoon drivers.
