BERWICK’S new selective entry school will be named after one of the nation’s leading scientists Sir Gustav Nossal.
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley made the announcement this week, saying it was fantastic that Sir Gustav Nossal, who had a prestigious career in science and academia, had agreed to give his name to the school.
Sir Gustav Nossal said he was honoured to lend his name to the new school, Nossal High School.
“I am a great believer in the state education system, and this honour is one of the nicest things that has happened to me,” he said.
The school, which will be located at the Berwick campus of Monash University, will take an initial enrolment of up to 200 Year 9 students including places for highly able students from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Former Mt Erin Secondary College principal Roger Page was named as Nossal High School’s first principal.
Mr Page has been instrumental in the development of Nossal High School as a project officer, according to Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley. Nossal High School will complement Victoria’s successful existing selective entry schools – Melbourne High School and Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School.
The school, which is the ninth new school built in the area by the State Government, will open during term one next year.
Applications to sit the selective entry school exam for Nossal High School are now open and close on Friday 29 May.
