MODEL Samantha Downie is set to make her mark in the fashion capital of the world, Milan.
The business and commerce student at Berwick’s Monash University made it big after coming third in last year’s series of Australia’s Next Top Model.
The striking brunette, who grew up in Endeavour Hills, told the News she was planning to head overseas next year, with the hope of making it big on the international fashion scene.
She said watching the current series of Australia’s Next Top Model on pay television channel Fox 8 brought back memories of her time on the show.
“All I can say is I’m glad it’s not me, as it was hard and very competitive,” she said.
Downie walked away from last year’s show with $5000 after being voted Australia’s Most Favourite Next Top Model.
During the three-month show, Downie said the competition between the contestants grew fierce.
“I was criticised for being too commercial in the modelling industry,” she said.
“I think I have a unique look that represents what Australia is.”
The best part of the show was learning how to walk, talk and stand like a model, according to Downie.
Following the show, she moved to Sydney to model full-time after being snapped up by leading Sydney agency Priscilla’s Model Management.
“While in Sydney I did a shoot for Nivea, which ended up being posted on buses and trams all around Australia,” she said.
“And I also did the new Kayser underwear advertisement. I’m the one wearing the purple undies,” she said.
The 21-year-old lasted in Sydney for about six months before deciding to return home to finish her degree.
When the up-and-coming model is not busy studying for exams or travelling for fashion shoots, Downie says she enjoys the simple things in life like going to the movies and shopping with friends.
