Comets ‘set to improve’

By Stuart Teather
CASEY Comets’ State League Two South East season went from bad to worse on the weekend with another loss, this time 2-0 to top side Morwell Pegasus.
A Frank Albanese double made sure Casey would remain winless for at least another week and one step closer to securing a relegation spot at the bottom of the ladder.
But it was an improved performance from the Comets, who are slowly turning around their season after a series of poor results.
Coach Tony Saunders said the scoreline could have read very differently had his side converted some of its chances.
“I think we had about 17 shots to four or five in the second half,” he said.
“It is a bit disappointing that we didn’t get something out of the game.
“We haven’t been playing well, there’s no hiding that fact, but we have had some issues converting as well, there’s no doubt about that.”
But Saunders had a message for Comets fans that have stuck with the team so far.
“It’ll come, we’re getting very close, the last couple of weeks have been very good performances,” he said.
“Really we should’ve got something out of the game on Saturday, it would’ve lifted the bar for the following week.
“But it’ll come, there’s no doubt about it.”
In State League Three South East, Berwick City pulled off the upset of the round, downing ladder leader Springvale City 2-0 at Ross Reserve.
City rocketed up to fourth place with the win, courtesy of an Orlando Mejias double in the second half.
Provisional League One South East side Endeavour United continued its resurgence, registering a 2-0 win against Monbulk.
Goals to Stefan Ciccarelli and Cristhian Cortina either side of the break ensured United got its third win of the season and the side moved into eighth place, locked in a three-way tie on nine points.
Doveton also had a good result, recording a 2-2 draw with top side Fitzroy City at Fairfield Park.
Fitzroy held a 1-0 lead at the break, but Hugo Reyes and Gino Santangelo scored for the Doves to help secure a point.
There will be no soccer this weekend with all divisions taking a break over the long weekend.
