A HILLCREST Christian College student has calculated his way to winning this year’s national Mathletics competition held in Queensland.
Year 7 student Jarrod McAleese took home the title from the Jetstar Gold Coast Titans Secondary School Math-letics Competition after tallying the most points in a minute by answering various maths questions correctly.
The 12-year-old said he didn’t expect to win the nationwide competit-ion.
“There were four of us in the final and the other contestants I beat were in Years 8, 9 and 10,” he said.
“But I nearly struck out after 10 seconds because I got two wrong and once you get three wrong you’re out of the challenge.”
This is the first time the school has had a representative in the event.
Teacher Dwayne Smith said Jarrod was very quick at mental maths processes and enjoyed competing against others.
