Cannons fire

CASEY Hockey Club’s men’s State League Three side fought out an agonising 1-1 draw against Knox on the weekend.
The Cannons favoured their chances against a Knox team one spot ahead of them in eighth and a screamer from the fleet-footed Nick Wood had them one up in the first 10 minutes.
Knox fought back and had several chances on goal before half-time that goalkeeper Andrew Ashcroft kept out with the help of defenders Nick Hatch and Ben Smith.
Casey was 1-0 up at half-time and came out firing in the second and played all over Knox, but could not find the sealing goal.
A goal-mouth scrap with 10 minutes to go resulted in a Knox goal and, despite the Cannons flocking forward in waves, that’s how the score stayed.
Midfield Rolls Royce Blake Edwards and sprightly young gun Evan Rundell were integral for Casey, as was winger Cam Ritchie.
It was the Cannons’ fifth draw of the season and coach Lawrie Edwards said his young side needed to ‘learn how to win’.
“They’re playing good hockey, they’re young and fast and have the ability to score goals,” he said.
“We just need to learn how to close sides out when we get ahead.”
The women’s Metro Four South side broke through for victory over Knox 2-1 with Kerry Hicks winding back the clock to net a goal.
Denise Rosetti was the other goalscorer for the fourths.
Casey’s Metro One East team went down 3-2 to Knox, despite a double from the talented Josh Hondow.
The Metro Three South side got back on the winners’ list with a 2-0 win over Knox, through a double from young gun Craig Moore.
Steven Randall played one of the better first halves of thirds’ hockey you will see, while Rob Strang was defiant in the goals.
The women’s State League Three side went down 1-0 against Mornington, while the Metro One South team had a resounding 4-0 win against Mornington.
Collegians handed the Cannons’ Metro Three South outfit a walkover.
