A GARAGE and home hair salon have been destroyed after a blaze in Berwick last Saturday.
Berwick and Beaconsfield firefighters were called to a Willslie Crescent property in the late afternoon.
Although the garage was ablaze, Berwick fire brigade Captain Alan Boyd said firefighters were able to stop the fire spreading to the main residence.
He said there were concerns due to the garage containing oxy-acetylene equipment and quantities of various hairdressing chemicals, including hydrogen peroxide.
“One of the priorities of the fire crews was to locate the oxy-acetylene cylinders, cool them and remove them from the structure,” Captain Boyd said.
It took crews less than 15 minutes to bring the blaze under control, though firefighters were on scene for some time extinguishing hot spots.
Captain Boyd said he believed the fire was the result of a kerosene heater igniting an accidental fuel spillage.
