Casey set forcarbon store

CASEY council is set to enter into an agreement with the Western Port Greenhouse Alliance (WPGA) to establish a possible regional carbon sink in the municipality.
The proposed site for the carbon sink is set for 1 Heatherton Road in Doveton, a 10-hectare site just off the Monash Freeway.
The council has been working with the WPGA to develop ways of reducing carbon emissions and responding to the impact of climate change.
Carbon sinks are plantations grown to offset greenhouse gas emissions,
According to council officers, due to the rapid growth in Casey the area has an increasing trend in carbon dioxide emissions.
In a report presented to the council earlier this month, the officers said to offset the carbon emissions, council could remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store the carbon in carbon sinks.
The objective of the WPGA carbon sinks program is to promote the establishment of permanent conservation plantings to store carbon locally.
The council officers said the Doveton site had no plans to be used for active recreation.
