Cannons aim high

LAKE Edwards’ thrilling late goal on the weekend breathed new life into Casey Hockey Club’s State League Three side’s battle to avoid relegation.
The Cannons went ahead through Scott Daly, but Frankston found an equaliser before half-time.
Casey controlled the game in the second half, but, as has been the case for most of the season, was not able to convert, until Mark Dowell set up Edwards’ last-gasp goal.
Craig Moore gave a good account of himself in his first game in the ones this season and Ben Smith was rock solid at full-back.
Frankston almost converted in the dying seconds, but the Cannons held on to lift themselves off the bottom of the ladder with three games left in the year.
Coach Lawrie Edwards said it was vital Casey stayed in State League Three.
“It’s only our second win of the season, but let’s hope this has breathed new life into our boys and they can pick up a couple of wins and keep us in State League Three,” he said.
In a must-win game to keep its finals chances alive, the Metro One East team came away with a disappointing draw with Monash University.
James Munro and Luke Cousins managed to set up a number of forward thrusts for Casey in the first half that were not converted.
Monash took control of the game after half-time, but strong defence from Phil Wagg, Andrew Bills and Brendan Yates thwarted Uni’s hopes of taking full points.
A win for the twos would have seen them slide into the four, but they now sit fifth.
In the other men’s game, the depleted Metro Three South side smashed Frankston 6-0, with Blaine Cridge scoring a hat-trick.
In the women’s division, the State League Three team lost to Footscray 2-0 and Metro One South beat TEM 2-0.
Metro Three South drew 1-1 with Monash Uni and Metro Four South registered a 1-0 win over Camberwell.
