Cannons on track for finals action

AN intriguing weekend of hockey saw the Casey Cannons’ men’s firsts move a step closer to keeping their State League One spot and four other teams move closer to finals action.
The men’s twos and threes and women’s firsts and seconds all look on track to play finals.
The women’s twos also secured a great result, knocking off Monash 3-0.
The Metro One South side controlled its game from the start, with Liz Nicholl picking up a loose ball, bamboozling a defender and slotting the first goal within two minutes.
Emma Doulton added a second just before half-time.
The second half provided more Casey goalscoring opportunities, but a cracking strike from a penalty corner was disallowed due to its height.
The final goal of the match was a great display of teamwork that resulted in Doulton slotting her second of the match to put the result beyond doubt.
The Cannons now sit fourth, but will have to keep winning to ensure a spot in the finals.
The ones also had a strong win over Latrobe, with a double from April Picton making it a 2-0 result.
The men’s State League Three team made it two on the trot for the first time this season, with a high-scoring 5-3 victory over Baw Baw.
There wasn’t much defence played in this one as goals to Nick Hatch, Blake Edwards and young gun Robert Third backed up Matt Light’s double.
In a tight battle for fourth spot, Metro One East sent a message to its counterparts with a resounding 6-0 pounding of Baw Baw.
Cameron Ritchie, Luke Cousins, Phil Wagg, Paul Hogg, Matt Gittus and Josh Hondow all scored.
In the junior game of the week, Mitchell Tomkins announced himself as a name to watch, scoring four first-half goals in the under-nine white team’s 4-0 win over Mentone.
Strong performances from full-back Erin Tuohy and midfielders Ryan Mudford, Carter Reed and Ross Shilliday allowed Tomkins the space he needed to fire home the quadrella.
