Cannons make a noise

THE Casey Cannons’ men’s State League Three hockey side showed top-of-the-table Geelong how far it has come this season at the weekend.
The Cannons went down 4-2, but that’s a vast improvement on the 10-0 thrashing it copped when these two sides last met.
Penalty corner expert Nick Hatch secured both goals.
Coach Lawrie Edwards was pleased with his side’s performance.
“We’ve come a long way from there (the 10-0 loss),” Edwards said.
“We’ve got a big challenge next week against Old Xaverians. We need a win to assure us staying in State League Three.”
Casey is three points off the bottom of the ladder with one round to go.
Metro One East went down to Southern United 3-1, with Josh Hondow scoring a classy goal.
The Metro Three South team made it two draws in a row with a 0-0 result against ECHO.
A win against Chadstone this week will secure third spot for the Cannons.
In the women’s division, the firsts defeated Baw Baw 3-0 in State League Three.
Fiona Young, April Picton and Claire Rundell shared the goals.
The Cannons have now all but sewn up fourth spot on the ladder with one round to go.
The reserves ground out a 2-1 win over MCC through goals to Carlie Stewart and Kathryn Van.
They’re now two points clear in second and anything but a loss this week will secure the double chance.
Metro Three South lost to Baw Baw 5-0 and Mentone beat the fourths 2-0 in Metro Four South.
