THE $7.4 million upgrade along the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road is now complete.
The latest works extend the duplication of the road by around one kilometre, providing two lanes each way between Centre and Pound roads.
Protected turn lanes for local access and u-turns have also been built as part of the road upgrade, with an off-road path for cyclists and pedestrians put in adjacent to the new southbound lanes.
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said the works would improve traffic flow in the area, significantly reducing delays at peak times.
“With booming residential development in Melbourne’s south-east many more residents rely on the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road as their primary route for local travel and to access commercial and industrial areas,” Ms Graley said.
Narre Warren South resident Lyn Pickering, who has been living along the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road for 39 years, said the road had been a problem for years.
“We were in desperate need of the duplication of the road because of the amount of houses popping up in Narre Warren South,” she said. Mrs Pickering said she was still concerned about the 80km/h speed limit.
“We get hoons dragging up the hill and it’s become a real problem. The police need to sit out there and catch these hoon drivers,” she said.
According to Ms Graley, the project complements previous works on the road in recent years such as the removal of the rail level crossing south of the Princes Highway and widening of this key arterial road between the highway and Centre Road.
